I am wondering why the card has flash... Is it just for flavor? Situational mid-combat control switch shenanigans? Counter-aggro deck support?

The second one mostly.

I've played several games where you lose control of most of your stuff (I'm looking at you Roil Elemental [link] ) so I can see flashing this in right after declare attackers, or something.

Ah yes, the haste blinded me to the fact that you could use them as blockers. :)
